Cameroon launched its 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign with a 3-1 victory against Comoros on Thursday, September 24, in Garoua. Bryan Mbeumo, recently appointed captain of the Indomitable Lions, scored the second goal for Cameroon.
David Pagou’s men took the lead in the 39th minute thanks to Dina Ebimbe Nyengue, assisted by Danny Namaso. They then accelerated after the break: Mbeumo extended the score to 2-0 in the 48th minute, on a pass from Bilal Nsongo.
The Comoros reacted almost immediately. Warmed Omari reduced the gap in the 51st minute, with Bendjaloud Youssouf providing the final pass. This response kept the match open, without preventing Cameroon from regaining control.
Namaso puts Cameroon out of harm’s way
Danny Namaso definitively secured the victory in the 81st minute. The forward finished an action set up by Junior Tchamadeu to score the third goal for the Indomitable Lions. Cameroon started in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Mbeumo and Namaso behind Christian Kofane. The Comoros, organized in a 5-3-2, put up real resistance: they tried to come back after Omari’s goal, but the Cameroonian defense held firm until the final whistle.
This victory provides Cameroon with their first three points in Group G, which also includes Namibia and Congo. More importantly, it offers an initial sporting response to the new coach David Pagou and his captain. The appointment of Bryan Mbeumo had been announced before the start of the qualifiers.
A trip to Congo to confirm
The Indomitable Lions will have to quickly follow up. Their second match is scheduled for September 29 in Congo, before the double confrontation against Namibia in November. The Comoros will host Namibia on the same day.
The group stage is set to determine the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. For Cameroon, this initial success allows them to approach the next phase with a positive goal difference and a captain who has already proven decisive.
