Guillaume Soro was reappointed as the head of Generations and United Peoples (GPS) following the internal vote held on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The sole candidate in the race, the former Ivorian Prime Minister thus retains the presidency of his movement.
The re-election was reported on Sunday by Radio France Internationale. No detailed results were available in the sources consulted at the time of writing. However, the renewal was expected after the close of candidate submissions, which left only Guillaume Soro in the race.
A procedure initiated in early September
The GPS Electoral Committee opened the submission of candidacies on September 8, following the decision of the National Conference of Citizen Expression to set the presidential renewal for September 26. Pressecotedivoire had then specified that the procedure followed the internal electoral code validated by the movement’s authorities.
Guillaume Soro had officially announced his candidacy a few days later. According to L’Informateur, the file was to include a program dedicated to the future of GPS and his proposals for Côte d’Ivoire. At the deadline, no competing candidacies had been registered.
Former Prime Minister and former President of the National Assembly, Guillaume Soro has led GPS since its inception. The movement continues its political activities from abroad despite its dissolution ordered by the Ivorian judiciary in 2021.
This renewal consolidates the current leadership of GPS, without prejudging a potential national candidacy or the return of its president to Côte d’Ivoire. No new announcement on these two points accompanied the consulted result.
