Ivory Coast reaffirmed before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in New York its support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco for Western Sahara. Ambassador Tiémoko Moriko called for intensified diplomatic efforts to reach a resolution of the dispute.

The Ivorian permanent representative expressed Abidjan’s “full support” for this initiative. He mentioned the backing of approximately 130 states, including three permanent members of the Security Council.

The diplomat also described Security Council resolution 2797 as a significant turning point in handling the case. He advocated for dialogue, realism, and compromise.

This statement comes during the work dedicated to decolonization at the UN. The Fourth Committee is notably hearing representatives of non-self-governing territories and petitioners; hearings were scheduled from October 5 to 9 at the United Nations headquarters.

Adopted on October 31, 2025, resolution 2797 supports negotiations based on the Moroccan autonomy plan, presented to the UN Secretary-General on April 11, 2007. It aims for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable settlement.

The text calls on the parties to participate in discussions without preconditions. It maintains the objective of a political solution that ensures the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara and welcomes constructive suggestions in response to the autonomy plan.

The same resolution extends the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until October 31, 2026.
