The Ivorian government will review the proposals received regarding the future electoral body before submitting a final document to the National Assembly, announced its spokesperson, Amadou Coulibaly, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, in Abidjan, following the Council of Ministers meeting.
This step aims to bring the recommendations of political parties and civil society closer to the analyses of the executive. It comes as several opposition groups are calling for a national dialogue on the institution set to replace the Independent Electoral Commission, which was dissolved in May.
The contributions have been submitted to the Ministry of the Interior and Security. According to Amadou Coulibaly, they have all been received and must be studied to identify commonalities. The announced transmission to the deputies constitutes a forthcoming step, and not an already secured adoption of the reform.
Questioned about the prospect of a national dialogue, the spokesperson stated that he had no information allowing him to announce its occurrence. “I have not been informed that there will be a national dialogue,” he said. His remarks do not constitute a formal decision to reject this request.
Opposition parties and groups announced on Tuesday, October 13, that they had approached the Prime Minister to initiate consultations on the new body. Their approach focuses on seeking consensus before finalizing the framework, while the executive emphasizes the review of proposals by the competent institutions.
Amadou Coulibaly justifies the central role of the Ministry of the Interior by its responsibilities in territorial administration and the organization of elections. He links this approach to the conclusions of the previous political dialogue, according to which requests pertaining to an institution must be addressed to it.
The dissolution of the CEI was announced by the government on May 6, 2026, following the adoption of an ordinance in the Council of Ministers. The executive then presented it as a prerequisite for a new election management mechanism aimed at strengthening the confidence of political actors.
The Independent Electoral Commission was established by the law of October 9, 2001. It was responsible for the organisation and supervision of national elections as well as the referendum.
