Nicolas Pépé stated that the Senegalese midfielder Pape Gueye deserved the 2026 African Player of the Year award, during an interview broadcast by DAZN and reported on Monday, October 12, by Le Quotidien and Linfodrome.

The Ivorian international highlighted Pape Gueye’s performances in the Spanish league, his role with the Senegal national team, and his influence in the decisive matches of the last Africa Cup of Nations.

According to Le Quotidien, the Villarreal midfielder scored five goals and provided two assists in La Liga last season. He also scored three times during the 2025 AFCON, including a goal in the final.

Nicolas Pépé presented these results as the main arguments in favor of his choice. His statement constitutes a personal endorsement and does not prejudge the vote for the continental award.

Achraf Hakimi had won the previous edition of the trophy. Pape Gueye is among the players highlighted in the media discussions regarding his succession.
