Former Guinean Prime Minister Sidya Touré, a prominent opposition figure and former president of the Union of Republican Forces, died on Friday, September 25, 2026, in Paris, where he was hospitalized. His death was confirmed by members of his family and several Guinean political leaders.
According to Guinéenews, citing family sources, the former head of government passed away at the American Hospital of Paris after an illness. The family spokesperson, Malick Diaby, also confirmed his death to Mediaguinee, without immediately announcing the arrangements for the funeral.
Former minister and political ally of Sidya Touré, Ousmane Kaba paid tribute to him in a message published on Saturday. He praised a man who dedicated a large part of his life to the service of the Republic and recalled their collaboration in the government in the late 1990s.
Sidya Touré had led the Guinean government from July 1996 to March 1999 under the presidency of Lansana Conté. He then established himself as one of the main opposition figures, notably as a candidate in the 2010 presidential election.
His career is also closely linked to Côte d’Ivoire. Born in Dimbokro, he held several positions in the economic and financial administration there before becoming chief of staff to Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara in the early 1990s. He had settled again in Abidjan after leaving Guinea.
Details regarding the repatriation of his remains and his funeral had not yet been finalized on Saturday, according to the family spokesperson.
