The Republican Guard of Burkina Faso carried out, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Camp Naaba-Koom II, its first harvest of African catfish, as part of a project presented as a contribution to food sovereignty.

Two fish farming tanks with a capacity of 80 m³ each had been installed for this trial phase. In total, 5,000 fingerlings were introduced, including 2,000 in the first tank and 3,000 in the second.

According to information published by Burkina24 based on the communication from the Presidency of Faso, the fish were monitored for approximately seven months before harvest. Some specimens reached an average weight of about 3.5 kg.

The production is primarily intended for domestic consumption. The site also has a smokehouse with a capacity of 200 kg per day for drying and preservation.

The Republican Guard indicates that other livestock projects are already being implemented in 13 barracks and that fish farming could be extended to other units.
