Algeria avoided a surprise defeat in Burundi by securing a 2-2 draw on Tuesday, September 29, in Bujumbura, during the second matchday of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Greens experienced a disastrous start to the match. Farès Chaïbi scored an own goal as early as the 5th minute before Jospin Girumugisha doubled the Burundian lead in the 12th minute.
Belloumi and Boulbina bring back the Greens
Bachir Belloumi revived Algeria at the half-hour mark. Adil Boulbina then equalized in the 62nd minute, allowing Brahim Hemdani’s men to salvage a point after being two goals down.
The Algerian coach acknowledged after the match that his team had conceded two avoidable goals, while highlighting his players’ response.
Algeria remains undefeated after two matchdays. They had beaten Zambia 3-1 in their first game. Burundi, for its part, earns its first point after its initial defeat against Togo.
