The Sudanese army arrested Ahmed Haroun on Sunday, November 8, the leader of the dissolved National Congress Party and former official of Omar al-Bashir\u2019s regime, wanted since 2007 by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes committed in Darfur.<\/p>\n
Two officials from his party confirmed the detention to Reuters. A security official cited by AFP indicated that he had been taken into custody as part of judicial proceedings, without specifying the location or the legal basis invoked. The army had not issued a statement at the time.<\/p>\n
The National Congress Party denounced an arbitrary arrest and demanded his release.<\/p>\n
The detention occurred after a lengthy interview broadcast over the weekend, during which Ahmed Haroun asserted that his party and the army, despite their political differences, remained allies in the war against the Rapid Support Forces.<\/p>\n
On April 27, 2007, the ICC issued an arrest warrant against him. The case concerns 20 counts of crimes against humanity and 22 counts of war crimes, including murder, persecution, forced transfers, rape, acts of torture, attacks against civilians, and alleged pillaging committed in Darfur in 2003 and 2004.<\/p>\n
Ahmed Haroun was then serving as Minister of State for the Interior and oversaw the Darfur security office, according to the Court. He has always denied these accusations, presenting them as politically motivated.<\/p>\n
Arrested after the fall of Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, he remained in detention until the beginning of the war in 2023, when he left Kober prison with other former officials. Since then, he had maintained a low profile before his recent public reappearance.<\/p>\n
The conflict has pitted the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhane against the Rapid Support Forces of Mohamed Hamdane Daglo since April 2023. It has caused ethnic massacres, massive displacements, and episodes of famine, while Islamist militants linked to the former regime have supported several advances by the army.<\/p>\n
