The Abidjan-Plateau Court of First Instance sentenced Cahié Kunta, president of the movement Les Chapeaux rouges, to three months of imprisonment on Thursday, November 5. He was found guilty of disturbing public order, insults, and spreading false news, according to the hearing report published by Brut Afrique.

The judgment comes ten days after his summons to the Cybercrime Fighting Platform on October 26. Following his hearing, the movement leader was held overnight at the PLCC premises.

The next day, October 27, he was brought before the public prosecutor and then transferred to the Abidjan Penitentiary Center, the former MACA, under a detention order. This timeline was communicated by the general secretariat of the Red Hats in a text dated October 31.

The procedure notably concerned a video related to collective transport vehicles called gbakas and Canal+ Côte d’Ivoire. The movement had indicated that the other charges involved insults and the dissemination of false information through an automated computer system.

Created in December 2025, Les Chapeaux rouges present themselves as a citizen and apolitical movement committed to the cost of living and consumer rights. The collective had previously mobilized on rent issues in Abidjan, the regulation of VTC services, and access conditions to national channels on satellite packages.

In its statement of October 31, the general secretariat called on members and supporters of the movement to remain calm and await its forthcoming official communications.
