Africa CDC on Tuesday, November 3, requested Saudi Arabia to review and lift the travel restrictions imposed on Kenya due to Ebola, stating that the general measures do not correspond to the current epidemiological situation.<\/p>\n
The African Union health agency indicated that Kenya had recorded nine confirmed cases, including two deaths, all linked to a single transmission chain. No new cases have been reported since October 19, and no sustained transmission within the population has been identified.<\/p>\n
According to Africa CDC, five patients were able to leave the treatment unit on Tuesday after negative PCR tests. Forty-six people have also completed their twenty-one-day monitoring period, while the follow-up of other contacts and checks at entry points continue.<\/p>\n
The statement targets the restrictions announced by Riyadh at the end of October. Kenyan health authorities have challenged these measures, which affect travel and visas, arguing that the outbreak remains confined to an identified group of contacts.<\/p>\n
The World Health Organization advises against general travel and trade restrictions based on the available information. It prioritizes surveillance, screening, contact tracing, case isolation, and cross-border cooperation.<\/p>\n
The first recorded patient in Kenya had arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo at the beginning of October after transiting through Uganda. His diagnosis triggered a contact tracing effort in several countries, and the confirmed infections since then have remained linked to this initial group.<\/p>\n
Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, warned that overly broad measures could disrupt trade, separate families, and discourage the prompt reporting of new outbreaks. He called on Riyadh to engage in dialogue with Nairobi, Africa CDC, and the WHO in order to maintain only risk-proportionate measures.<\/p>\n
The Kenyan Ministry of Health stated on Tuesday that surveillance remains active at twenty-six entry points.
