The African Football Confederation reinstated on Thursday, October 29, the organization of the Africa Cup of Nations every two years, following a unanimous vote by its executive committee that cancels the transition to a four-year cycle announced in December 2025.<\/p>\n
The decision comes less than a year after the project was unveiled on December 20, 2025, in Rabat. Patrice Motsepe had then planned to maintain the 2027 and 2028 editions, before spacing the main African qualifying competition to every four years.<\/p>\n
The CAF president had announced a review of this reform during the strategic conference held from October 7 to 9 in Cape Verde. The consultation of the 54 member federations concluded on October 28, on the eve of the executive committee vote.<\/p>\n
The CAF explains its reversal by the uncertainties surrounding the future African Nations League. This competition, planned to follow a biennial schedule, would require several years before generating the expected revenue to finance continental football.<\/p>\n
Patrice Motsepe presented the return to a two-year cycle as a measure intended to protect the interests of the federations and those of African players competing in clubs outside the continent. The statement does not specify the schedule or the final format of the Nations League mentioned during the previous reform.<\/p>\n
The new schedule foresees an AFCON in 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, followed by editions in 2028, 2031, and 2033. CAF has linked the absence of an edition in 2030 to the World Cup, as continental final phases of national teams are generally not held in the same year.<\/p>\n
