South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday, October 27, the deployment of 510 soldiers to KwaZulu-Natal to support the police amid violence linked to anti-migrant protests. The presidency specified that the mission extends from October 9 to November 30, 2026, and represents an estimated cost of 34,082,720 rands. The soldiers are deployed as part of Operation Prosper to assist law enforcement in maintaining public order.<\/p>\n
According to authorities, the recent unrest was fueled by false information regarding the scope of the decision issued on July 7 by the Constitutional Court. This ruling removed administrative barriers that prevented certain foreigners from submitting an asylum application, without automatically granting them refugee status.<\/p>\n
KwaZulu-Natal, whose main city is Durban, experienced several incidents during the month of October. On October 8, vehicles were set on fire and shops looted in Durban and Soweto during protests hostile to foreigners, while arrests were announced by the police.<\/p>\n
On October 22, a foreign national was also reportedly beaten to death by a crowd in Durban, according to information reported by Reuters. The police investigation has yet to determine the exact circumstances of this assault.<\/p>\n
South African authorities had announced earlier in October the arrest of 30 people, including 25 in KwaZulu-Natal and five in the Gauteng province.
