The gasoline shortage affecting several cities in Niger reached Niamey on Sunday, October 18, where long queues formed in front of gas stations, as the government has just banned fuel exports to reserve national production for the domestic market.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Abdoulaye Seydou, signed an order on October 12 prohibiting the export of premium gasoline and diesel fuel. The text, made public on October 17, provides only for special authorization from the minister to export any potential surplus production.<\/p>\n
In the capital, until then spared from the disruptions observed in other cities, the list of stations supplied published by the Ministry of Commerce quickly attracted many motorists and motorcyclists. Some managers told AFP that their tanks had been empty for four days, while traffic appeared less dense than usual.<\/p>\n
However, the tensions go beyond the single episode in Niamey. According to the Ministry of Petroleum, the deficit recorded during the first eight months of 2026 reached 196.62 million liters for premium gasoline and 52.60 million liters for diesel. The shortage of gasoline had already exceeded the deficit observed for the entire year of 2025, which was 159.74 million liters.<\/p>\n
The Zinder Refining Company has an installed capacity of 20,000 barrels per day and supplies approximately 1.5 million liters of petroleum products daily, according to government data. However, this production is not fully available every day, making imports increasingly necessary to meet demand.<\/p>\n
The government also announced the establishment of a technical committee tasked with securing supply, strengthening production, and addressing cross-debts among sector stakeholders within a three-month period.<\/p>\n
Authorities are currently maintaining the official prices at 499 CFA francs per litre for premium gasoline and 618 CFA francs for diesel. General Abdourahamane Tiani rejected an increase in order not to raise the cost of living, according to AFP.<\/p>\n
