The Nigerien government announced on Monday, October 12, the opening of an investigation into the eruption of the Goumeri W-8 oil well, in the Agadem block, which was still not fully controlled seventeen days after it began. The investigation aims to determine the causes and responsibilities, with the support of Algerian experts, according to the Ministry of Petroleum.<\/p>\n
The incident began on September 25 at a facility operated by CNPC Niger Petroleum, a subsidiary of the Chinese group CNPC. The ministry reports no fatalities but states that two employees were hospitalized after being exposed from the first day. The platform sustained damage that also compromises the integrity of the neighboring wells Goumeri W-3 and W-4.<\/p>\n
In its situation report of October 12, the ministry indicates that initial findings rule out a criminal or terrorist origin, while specifying that the exact causes remain to be determined. The government announces precautionary and control measures regarding the operator, without presenting definitive conclusions on responsibility at this stage.<\/p>\n
Teams are constructing dikes, trenches, and basins to contain the oil, then recover it and transport it to the Goumeri treatment plant. Access is restricted and gases are monitored to prevent a fire, while local residents are urged to respect the safety perimeter.<\/p>\n
The extent of the environmental damage remains to be quantified. No volume of spilled oil nor any contaminated area is specified in the ministerial report relayed by AFP. The Niger Reflection and Action Group on Extractive Industries had warned of the risks to livestock, pastures, soils, and water resources.<\/p>\n
Goumeri holds a longstanding position in the exploitation of Agadem. The Nigerien framework of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative places the main crude processing center there, which was commissioned in 2011 and is connected to the secondary center in Sokor by a 58-kilometer pipeline.<\/p>\n
