Cocoa Capital, a subsidiary of the Ghanaian regulator COCOBOD, raised 3.39 billion cedis in a first short-term debt issuance aimed at financing cocoa purchases for the 2026-2027 season. The results of the operation were made public on Thursday, October 8, in Ghana.<\/p>\n
The securities were issued on October 5 with a yield of 11 percent and a maturity date set for June 28, 2027. The allocated amount represents approximately 85 percent of the indicative target of 4 billion cedis presented to investors for this first tranche.<\/p>\n
The amount corresponded to approximately 288 million dollars at the exchange rate of 11.77 cedis per dollar quoted on the day of the announcement. COCOBOD must use these resources to strengthen its capacity to purchase beans from producers and to ensure payments during the campaign.<\/p>\n
The issuance is part of a national program of 16.3 billion cedis launched at the end of September. The Ghanaian Ministry of Finance plans to raise 14 billion cedis through treasury bills for short-term liquidity needs and 2.3 billion through bonds to refinance part of the sector\u2019s old debt.<\/p>\n
The financing is provided by Cocoa Capital, a company wholly owned by COCOBOD. The government indicated that repayments would be backed by receivables derived from forward cocoa sales contracts and paid into accounts reserved for debt servicing.<\/p>\n
This domestic mechanism replaces part of the traditional recourse to international syndicated credit.
