Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger want to accelerate the creation of a more integrated economic space within the Confederation of Sahel States (AES). The ministers responsible for Industry and Trade are meeting this Monday, September 28, in Bamako after two days of preparatory work conducted by experts from the three countries.<\/p>\n
The discussions focus in particular on the obstacles to the free movement of people and goods, the financing mechanisms for strategic sectors, the attractiveness of investments, and the means to combat fraud and unfair competition.<\/p>\n
The stated objective is to move towards a genuine three-party free trade zone. Experts must also propose a roadmap for the creation of a joint purchasing center and a business climate observatory.<\/p>\n
The economic scope of the project is significant for three landlocked states seeking to reduce the costs of goods transportation and secure their supplies. The governments also emphasize the desire to further develop local value chains in agriculture, energy, mining, and industry.<\/p>\n
The project is part of a movement towards the accelerated institutionalization of the AES. In September, the three countries also worked on a protocol for cross-border cooperation and established a coordination framework between their telecommunications regulators.<\/p>\n
The ministerial meeting in Bamako must now specify which measures will be effectively adopted, their implementation schedule, and the mechanisms intended to remove the trade barriers identified by the experts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
