{"id":528330,"date":"2025-05-02T13:58:58","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T11:58:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/benews.ci\/en\/?p=528330"},"modified":"2025-05-02T13:58:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T11:58:59","slug":"davido-the-uk-coined-the-term-afrobeats-for-african-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/benews.ci\/en\/davido-the-uk-coined-the-term-afrobeats-for-african-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Davido: \u201cThe UK coined the term Afrobeats for African music\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nigerian artist Davido has claimed that the term &#8220;Afrobeats,&#8221; now widely associated with West African music, was originally coined in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in a recent interview with Ebro Darden on Apple Music, Davido explained that the British media created the label as a catch-all term to describe the growing wave of West African sounds entering the UK music scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe word \u2018Afrobeats\u2019 came from the UK, when D\u2019banj dropped \u2018Oliver Twist\u2019, which was the biggest song in the country at the time,\u201d Davido said. \u201cThey had to give the genre a name. But Afrobeat is really Fela\u2019s genre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His statement challenges a previous claim by superstar Akon, who had suggested he played a founding role in the rise of Afrobeats.
