Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s mother, Tina Knowles, has publicly spoken for the first time about being diagnosed with breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The details of her health scare are revealed in her new book, Matriarch: A Memoir<\/em>. Tina Knowles discovered the illness during a mammogram appointment that had been delayed for several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMy doctor told me I had breast cancer,\u201d she wrote. \u201cA small tumor in my left breast was cancerous; the larger mass in my right breast was benign, but it needed to be removed as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She added: \u201cShe told me it was stage 1A and assured me that my prognosis was good. The next step was to consult an oncologist and a breast surgeon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tina Knowles waited until the day of the diagnosis to share the news with Beyonc\u00e9. \u201cShe took it well, stayed positive, and I could already see her mind going to work, approaching this like a task to be handled with precision,\u201d she said of Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s reaction to the diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cShe found me the best specialist, and I clearly remember her saying: \u2018I want you to get a second opinion on the treatment plan,\u2019\u201d Knowles added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Texas native said her daughter \u201creached out to one of the best breast surgeons in the country\u201d so she could have a private consultation.
