“There can be no promising democratic regime without a vibrant civil society,” says Paul Biya

Cameroonian President Paul Biya has publicly praised, via a statement on the social media platform X, the crucial role played by civil society in the political, social, and cultural life of the country. He described it as “dynamic” and a key actor in civic education and the promotion of numerous national causes.

In his message, the Head of State emphasized that civil society—comprising NGOs, labor unions, community associations, and other grassroots organizations—actively contributes to building a more inclusive democracy and supporting national development.

“Cameroonian civil society is remarkably dynamic and makes a valued contribution to civic education and the promotion of causes of various kinds—political, economic, cultural, environmental, and professional,” President Biya stated.

Paul Biya’s conviction

His remarks come at a time when civil society is playing an increasingly important role in raising public awareness, defending human rights, and helping shape more effective public policies.

According to the President, a strong democratic state cannot exist without the active and constructive participation of grassroots actors.

“My conviction is that there can be no promising democratic regime without a vibrant civil society,” he affirmed, calling for a strengthened partnership between the state and the nation’s active forces.
