Terrorism in Benin: Former President Nicéphore Soglo Calls for National Unity

Nicéphore Soglo, the first president of Benin’s democratic era, has spoken out about the escalating terrorist attacks in the north of the country.

The former President of the Republic of Benin, Nicéphore Dieudonné SOGLO, reacted to the deadly terrorist assault against Beninese soldiers in the northern region. In a message posted on his Facebook page, he expressed deep sorrow over the latest attack, describing it as “cowardly, barbaric, and unbearable.”

“Benin mourns its sons who fell while protecting our land and our people,” the message reads. The former head of state took the opportunity to pay tribute to the brave sons of the nation who died defending their country and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the security forces.

With a solemn and unifying tone, the former president called for national unity: “We must hold fast to one constant, no matter what happens and regardless of the circumstances: to remain united and determined in the face of the terrorist threat,” he declared.

True to his vision of a strong and sovereign Benin, Nicéphore SOGLO evoked the legacy of the nation’s iconic resistance figures: “The land of Guézo, Béhanzin, Bio Guera, and Kaba will never bow to the blackmail of our enemies.”

Nicéphore Dieudonné SOGLO is a former president of Benin, former mayor of Cotonou—Benin’s economic capital—and former vice president of the Forum of Former African Heads of State and Government.
