In response to rising insecurity, Nigerien authorities have announced stricter security measures in the western region of Dosso. As of May 25, the circulation of motorcycles will be strictly prohibited across the area, according to an official decree issued Thursday by regional governor Bana Alhassane.
The measure will affect 30 municipalities and will be enforced for an initial period of three months, with the possibility of extension depending on how the security situation evolves.
A prior decree dated May 7 had already imposed the ban in three high-risk zones: Dogonkiria, Dioundiou, and border areas near Nigeria.
Plagued by recurrent armed attacks, the Dosso region was once again shaken last Sunday when an ambush—blamed on terrorist groups—claimed the lives of around ten soldiers. Several assailants were reportedly neutralized during the clash.
Motorcycles are frequently used by armed groups to carry out swift attacks, prompting authorities to resort to such bans in an effort to curb mobility and enhance security in volatile regions.
