Gregg Popovich has officially stepped down from his role as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, the team announced on Friday. The 76-year-old, who suffered a stroke in November 2024 and had not coached since October 31, will now serve as the franchise’s president of basketball operations.
“While my love and passion for the game remain strong, I’ve decided the time is right to step away from coaching,” Popovich said in a statement released by the team.
“I will be forever grateful to the incredible players, coaches, staff, and fans who allowed me the privilege of serving as head coach of the Spurs. I’m thrilled to continue contributing to the organization, the community, and the city that mean so much to me,” he added.
Popovich leaves behind a legendary legacy: 1,422 regular-season wins and five NBA championships, ranking him third all-time behind Phil Jackson (11 titles) and Red Auerbach (9). His tenure in San Antonio transformed the Spurs into one of the most respected and consistent franchises in league history.
