Mexico: influencer shot dead during TikTok livestream

Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old Mexican influencer, was fatally shot while livestreaming on TikTok from her beauty salon in Guadalajara, local authorities have confirmed.

According to the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office, a man entered her salon in the Zapopan suburb and opened fire. In the video, Marquez can be seen holding a stuffed toy while seated at a table just moments before the fatal shooting. The livestream abruptly ends as another person picks up her phone and stops the recording.

Authorities are treating the incident as a feminicide—a gender-based killing—even though the motive remains unclear. No suspects have been identified so far, and forensic teams are continuing the investigation.

Gender-based violence remains a major crisis in Mexico, where the United Nations reports that an average of 10 women or girls are killed daily by partners or family members.

Marquez had nearly 200,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram. Her fans have expressed deep shock and sorrow following the news of her death. Zapopan mayor Juan José Frangie stated that Marquez had not requested police protection despite receiving threats. “A feminicide is the worst thing that can happen,” he said.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting and confirmed Marquez’s death. According to local media, the assailant allegedly gained entry by pretending to deliver a gift.
