The African Peoples Party–Ivory Coast (PPA-CI) presented to the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, its concerns regarding the situation of detainees whom the party describes as “prisoners of conscience” and the establishment of the future electoral body.

The meeting took place on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at the PPA-CI headquarters in Abidjan. In the absence of Laurent Gbagbo, the discussions were led by the party’s first vice-president, Assoa Adou, accompanied by several party officials.

According to several consistent reports, the delegation emphasized two issues: the situation of detainees in the Ivorian political context and the procedures for replacing the Independent Electoral Commission, which was dissolved in May 2026.

Leonardo Santos Simão presented this sequence as a stage in his consultations with Ivorian political actors. The demands made remain those of the PPA-CI and do not constitute, at this stage, a definitive position of the United Nations on the issues raised.

The reform of electoral governance has been the subject of discussions between the government and several opposition parties since the dissolution of the CEI on May 6, 2026.
