Ivory Coast finished in second place at the first African MMA Championship held from October 13 to 15, 2026, at the Treichville Sports Palace in Abidjan, with a total of 16 medals.

The Ivorian team won four gold medals, seven silver medals, and five bronze medals. This tally places them behind Algeria, which topped the overall ranking with six titles, one silver medal, and one bronze medal.

Burkina Faso completed the podium with two gold medals, three silver, and five bronze. Guinea and Benin took fourth and fifth places, while Ghana, Sudan, and Cameroon are also among the medal-winning nations.

The competition was organized by the Ivorian MMA Federation under the auspices of the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts. The finals concluded on Thursday, October 15, at the Treichville venue, following three days of fights.

The president of the Ivorian federation, Jackson Tapé, stated on Friday that 19 countries had ultimately participated. A twentieth delegation withdrew due to visa-related difficulties, according to the official. Before the opening, GAMMA had announced that 15 national federations were already registered.

Jackson Tapé stated that this first edition allowed Ivorian fighters to establish themselves at the continental level. However, Côte d’Ivoire’s second place is based on a total number of medals higher than that of Algeria, with the ranking being primarily determined by the number of titles.

Ivorian athletes must now prepare for the World Championship scheduled from December 18 to 28, 2026, in Antalya, Turkey. The federation plans to resume training by focusing on the weaknesses observed during the competition in Abidjan.
