Ivory Coast: Gribo-Popoli hydroelectric dam completed, awaits commissioning

The Gribo-Popoli hydroelectric dam, with a capacity of 112 megawatts, is now fully completed. Located on the Sassandra River in southwestern Ivory Coast, the project was executed by Chinese firm SinoHydro. The only step remaining is the official commissioning by Ivorian authorities.

The announcement was made by Energy Minister Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly during a site visit last Friday in Soubré, 369 kilometers from Abidjan. “The dam is 100% complete,” he declared, expressing his satisfaction with the quality of the infrastructure, which he said “will be a source of national pride.”

The minister praised both the on-time delivery and construction quality, commending SinoHydro, a subsidiary of the Power Construction Corporation of China (Power China), for its “outstanding professionalism.” He also acknowledged the contribution of Côte d’Ivoire Énergies, which oversaw the project.

Looking ahead, Sangafowa-Coulibaly announced plans to build three additional dams along the Sassandra River, alongside the development of biomass and solar power plants, as part of the country’s broader efforts to boost national energy capacity.
