During an episode of Chude Live Conversation Show, Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele broke her silence about a dark chapter in her life, marked by online mockery, depression, and a journey of healing.
Speaking candidly before a live audience, Akindele revealed the emotional toll of relentless criticism on social media. Far from the confident, smiling figure seen on screen, she shared how online trolls targeted her personal life—especially her relationships.
“There was a video circulating on social media of women mocking me because I didn’t have a husband,” she said. “My God! I saw all the insults. I saw people saying I left one husband for another.”
A burden too heavy to carry alone
The emotional weight became overwhelming. “I cried and cried and cried. I told myself: ‘You have to talk to someone. You can’t keep going like this.’”
That moment of introspection led her to take a step that remains taboo in many African societies: seeking professional help. “I reached out and started talking. I did things I couldn’t tell anyone. I spoke with my therapist, and I started to feel better,” she revealed.
A message of hope for silent sufferers
Funke Akindele used her deeply personal story to send a powerful message to others struggling in silence.
“It’s so important to speak up. You need to. You can’t carry everything alone. I’m so much stronger now. I have the strength to face life’s challenges,” she said.
According to her, prioritizing mental health and seeking help is not a sign of weakness—but an act of true courage.
