Gabon: vice presidents meet with head of state to define key priorities for new term

Appointed under the newly established Fifth Republic, Gabon’s two vice presidents—of the Republic and the Government—Séraphin Moundounga and Alexandre Barreau-Chambrier, were received in audience on Monday, May 5, by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. The official meetings, broadcast by national channel Gabon 24, mark the formal start of their mandates.

First to be received was Alexandre Barreau-Chambrier, newly appointed Vice President of the Government, who expressed his gratitude to the Head of State. “We came to express our appreciation and listen to the priorities set by the President,” said the former Transitional Deputy Prime Minister.

An economist by training, former lecturer, and ex-IMF official, Barreau-Chambrier highlighted several key areas of focus: access to water and electricity, youth unemployment, economic diversification, and strengthening public finances. A prominent political figure, he was also a vocal supporter of President Oligui Nguema within the Alternance 2023 coalition.

Next, Séraphin Moundounga, Vice President of the Republic, was received by the President. The former minister thanked the Head of State for placing his trust in him and pledged to live up to the responsibility. “It’s a challenge to be met with loyalty to the President and dedication to the success of this first term,” he told Gabon 24.

Both men are now tasked with implementing the presidential roadmap, in accordance with the provisions of the new Constitution.
