ECOWAS: Commission President visits Nigeria–Benin border post

Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, conducted a working visit on Wednesday, May 7, to the border crossing between Nigeria and Benin. The purpose of the visit was to assess the implementation of the ECOWAS Protocol on the free movement of persons and goods.

During his inspection of the Lagos–Seme corridor, Dr. Touray engaged with local residents and identified key barriers to mobility along this strategic route. He also held talks with government officials from both Nigeria and Benin, focusing on strengthening regional integration and enhancing trade flows.

The Gambian diplomat took the opportunity to review ECOWAS-funded infrastructure at the joint border post. He stressed the importance of removing operational bottlenecks to improve traffic flow while ensuring the safety and well-being of border communities.

Dr. Touray reaffirmed the regional organization’s commitment to supporting member states in fully implementing the Protocol, with the broader goal of fostering an open and integrated West African economic space.
