Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko arrived in Burkina Faso on the evening of Friday, May 16, 2025, for a 48-hour official visit aimed at strengthening ties between the two West African nations.
Upon his arrival in Ouagadougou, Sonko was welcomed by Burkinabè Prime Minister Jean-Emmanuel Ouédraogo before being received by the transitional president, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. While no official statement has been issued by the Senegalese Prime Minister’s Office regarding the specific agenda of discussions, the visit signals a notable diplomatic rapprochement.
During his stay, Ousmane Sonko is expected to attend the inauguration of the Thomas Sankara Mausoleum, a tribute to the iconic leader of the Burkinabè revolution.
This visit takes place at a time of shifting alliances in the region, as Burkina Faso distances itself from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The trip reflects a growing willingness by Dakar and Ouagadougou to deepen bilateral cooperation in a changing geopolitical context.
