Benin secured its first victory in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers by defeating Mauritania 2-1 on Tuesday, September 29, in Abidjan.
Rodolfo Aloko was the key architect of the Cheetahs’ success. The Beninese midfielder opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a pass from Charbel Gomez Azongnitode, before doubling the lead in the 46th minute on a service from Yamirou Ouorou.
Benin Resists Mauritanian Comeback
Mauritania reduced the gap in the 80th minute through Aboubakary Koita, but Gernot Rohr’s men maintained their lead until the final whistle.
This success allows Benin to confirm the valuable point earned in Burkina Faso during the first matchday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
With four points, the Cheetahs join Burkina Faso at the top of Group F. Mauritania, victorious over the Central African Republic in their first match, remain at three points.
