Gabon secured its first victory in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers by defeating Niger 2-0 on Tuesday, September 29, in Franceville.
After a goalless first half, Rody Junior Effaghe opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. Denis Bouanga then doubled the lead in the 77th minute to secure the Panthers’ victory.
Expected reaction after the setback in Morocco
Gabon had to respond after their 2-0 defeat in Morocco on the first matchday. Thierry Mouyouma’s men this time better controlled their game and prevented Niger from equalizing.
With these three points, the Panthers join Niger in Group A standings, behind a Morocco team that has won its first two matches.
Niger had started their campaign with a 2-1 victory against Lesotho before conceding in Franceville.
