In March 2024, the Nigerian Cinema world was struck by the loss of veteran Mr Ibu. A month after his passing, the schedule for his funeral has been revealed by his family.

The death of John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, at the age of 63, left an indelible mark. Despite his prolonged illness and the loss of a leg, he managed to leave a lasting impression through his comic acting in the Nollywood industry.

The organization of the farewell to this iconic figure of Nigerian comedy has been entrusted to his family. According to the communique from his elder brother, Elder Sunday Okafor, Mr Ibu’s funeral rites will span over a period of five days.

Tributes will commence on Tuesday, June 25 in the actor’s hometown, Eziokwe Amuri, located in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, with a commemorative football match. This will be followed on Wednesday, June 26 by “Mr Ibu’s Night”, an event featuring a candlelight procession and live performances, paying homage to the actor’s life and cinematic work.

A Christian wake is scheduled for June 27, and the burial of the esteemed comedian will take place the following day, at the Eziokwe Amuri cemetery. The week of mourning will conclude on Sunday, June 30 with a thanksgiving church service, where family, friends, and fans can share their appreciation and memories. The family invites everyone who was touched by Mr Ibu to join them in these moments of remembrance and honor.
